Laser hair removal is a popular cosmetic treatment that involves using laser technology to remove unwanted hair from different parts of the body. Unlike traditional hair removal methods like waxing and shaving, laser hair removal provides long-lasting results and eliminates the need for constant maintenance. In this blog post, we will provide you with the ultimate guide to laser hair removal.

First Up, What Methods Of Hair Removal Are There?

There are several methods of hair removal available, ranging from temporary to long-term solutions. Here are some of the most common methods of hair removal:

  1. Shaving: This is a temporary hair removal method that involves using a razor to cut the hair at the skin’s surface. While it’s quick and easy, the results only last for a day or two, and it can cause irritation and ingrown hairs.
  2. Waxing: Waxing involves applying hot wax to the skin and then pulling it off, along with the hair, using a strip of cloth. Waxing can provide longer-lasting results than shaving, but it can be painful and can cause skin irritation.
  3. Depilatory creams: Depilatory creams are products that dissolve the hair at the skin’s surface. They can be a convenient and painless option, but the results only last for a few days, and they can cause skin irritation.
  4. Electrolysis: Electrolysis is a long-term hair removal method that involves inserting a tiny needle into each hair follicle and using an electric current to destroy the hair root. Electrolysis can be time-consuming and expensive, but it’s effective on all hair types and skin colours.
  5. Laser hair removal: Laser hair removal is also a long-term hair removal method that uses a laser to target the hair follicles and prevent future hair growth. It can provide long-lasting results with faster treatment times.

What Is Laser Hair Removal?

Laser hair removal works by using a concentrated beam of light to target the hair follicles. The light is absorbed by the pigment in the hair, which converts it into heat. This heat then damages the hair follicle, preventing future hair growth. The laser used in the procedure is designed to target the hair follicle and not harm the surrounding skin. The laser used for hair removal emits a specific wavelength of light that can penetrate the skin and reach the hair follicle. The melanin in the hair follicle absorbs the light and converts it into heat, which destroys the hair follicle.

The process is repeated for each hair follicle in the treatment area. It works when the hair is in the active growth phase, which means a course is required to treat the hair at different stages if the growth cycle.

Who is is suitable for? Can I have laser hair removal if I have brown or black skin?

Laser hair removal works best on individuals with dark hair and light skin, as the contrast between the hair and skin allows the laser to target the hair follicle more effectively. However, advancements in laser technology have made it possible to treat a range of skin tones, although some may require more sessions to achieve the desired results.

Safety is paramount to us at Walton Street Wellness and our clinic features advanced laser technology that is suitable for all skin types, including darker skin tones, thanks to its unique features. Our laser is a medical grade laser by Lynton who have an excellent safety profile in laser technology. The Motus AY by Lynton Lasers allows for safe and effective treatment without causing damage to the surrounding skin.

What are the Benefits Of Laser Hair Removal?

  1. Long-lasting results: Unlike other temporary hair removal methods, laser hair removal can provide long-lasting results. After a series of treatments, people can experience up to 85-90% hair reduction.
  2. Precision: Laser hair removal can target specific areas of the body and remove unwanted hair without damaging the surrounding skin. This makes it a precise and effective method of hair removal.
  3. Speed: Laser hair removal can treat multiple hair follicles at once, making it a fast and efficient method of hair removal. Treatment times can vary depending on the area of the body being treated, but most sessions are relatively quick and can be completed during a lunch break.
  4. Convenience: This method can save time and money in the long run.
  5. Improved skin quality: Regular shaving and waxing can irritate the skin, causing redness, ingrown hairs, and other issues. Laser hair removal can improve the overall quality of the skin by stimulating collagen production.
  6. No Razor Rash: Laser hair removal eliminates the need for shaving, which can cause razor rash, ingrown hairs, and other skin irritations.

How Many Laser Hair Removal Sessions Will I Need?

The number of laser hair removal sessions required varies depending on factors such as the treatment area, hair growth cycle, and skin and hair type. During your consultation, Emma or Emily, our Laser therapists will assess the treatment area and work out a personalised treatment plan for you. Most people require a course of 6-9 treatments, with sessions spaced 4-8 weeks apart. Maintenance sessions may also be recommended to maintain the results.

How Do I Prepare for Laser Hair Removal?

To prepare for laser hair removal, you must avoid sun exposure for four weeks before treatment, stop using other hair removal methods such as waxing or hair removal creams.

You must shave the treatment area 24 hours before and if it is on the face, stop any products like retinol or exfoliating acids. We will give you specific pre treatment instructions at your patch test and consultation.

What Happens During a Laser Hair Removal Treatment?

During the procedure, a handheld laser device is used to target the hair follicles. Sensations during the treatment may include snapping or tingling, which can be adjusted based on pain tolerance. The duration of the treatment depends on the size of the treatment area. We apply a cooling gel and the Moveo handpiece (the pain free mode) has a cooling tip. We will also apply some cooling creams at the end of the session.

What is the Post-Treatment Care?

After laser hair removal, it is important to avoid direct sun exposure, keep the treated area clean and dry, avoid tight clothing and exfoliating, and apply a soothing cream or gel to reduce redness and inflammation.

Following our post-treatment instructions is crucial for proper healing and reducing the risk of complications.

Risks and Side Effects: While laser hair removal is generally safe, there are potential risks and side effects such as skin irritation, pigment changes, scarring, burns, eye injury, and hair regrowth. These risks can be minimized by choosing an experienced practitioner and following proper aftercare instructions. Types of Laser Hair Removal Machines: There are different types of laser hair removal machines available, including Diode Laser, Alexandrite Laser, Nd:YAG Laser, and IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) machines. Each type has its own advantages and disadvantages, and the best machine for an individual depends on their skin type, hair type, and the area being treated. In conclusion, laser hair removal is a safe and effective method of hair removal that provides long-lasting results with minimal discomfort. It is important to consult with a qualified practitioner to determine if you are a good candidate for the treatment and to ensure safe and effective results. By following the recommended treatment plan and aftercare instructions, you can achieve the best possible outcomes.
